ADJUVANT

Adjuvants are being used in vaccine production to encourage the immune system to instigate a prompt, prolonged and effective immune response to the vaccine, thereby increasing the vaccine effectiveness and also to provide a high degree of protection against the disease you are vaccinating against.

You may reach the same level of immune protection with fewer injections by using adjuvants than when vaccinating with the non-adjuvanted antigen by itself. This can be essential in many instances. For example, in developing countries where there are long distances between the vaccinating physician and the population, it can save valuable resources if vaccination can be achieved using fewer injections. Also, if you are vaccinating herds that need to be brought in from long distances, resources can be saved if fewer injections are required.
The use of adjuvants may also offer the opportunity to reduce the antigen content in the vaccine without decreasing the vaccine effectiveness.

If vaccinating pregnant animals that develop a high immune response in the mother animal, it may help the survival of the offspring, because they may receive maternal antibodies from weaning when the immune response of the offspring is not yet matured.
